The fascinating YouTube channel Vox posted a very informative hands on video of what is like to be a Lyft driver for a week. The ridesharing company currently claims that a driver could make up to $30 an hour. That sounds too good to be true, so does it hold up?

Is the Lyft CEO less of an asshole than Uber's?

Has anyone gotten a bead on whether the insurance companies have started making Lyft and Uber contractors buy commercial insurance? I figure that would be a matter of time (most likely after a nasty lawsuit). Outside of that, I'm not sure I'd want to do this without some extra coverage in the unfortunate event of an accident, or even a BS lawsuit.

I would imagine that is already in the fine print in most people private insurance contracts. My dad used to snow plow and one thing that would cut into his profits was having to get an enormous commercial policy. A friend of my parents that works in insurance was saying that 75% of the pick ups you see driving around with plows and private plates are probably violating their policy and using it to make money, violating their state motor vehicle registrations.

In regards to Uber/Lyft, they claim they carry a $1mil policy, except

they also conveniently don't want any liability or involvement when the shit hits the fan.

Kind of like the way the guy is paid above, Uber only wants to pay for when the driver is driving and nothing else.

i have a friend who beats off to any "disruptive" technology and keeps going on on how he's going to do this (or Uber) and make so much extra money.

To be fair, if you're in the right place at the right time, it can be more than reasonable. The issues come when it's 10AM on a Wednesday and there's nobody to drive for but 15 drivers. Like the guy in the video says, it's for someone who has a lot of extra time, but doesn't need the money. Why do it?

every couple months he comes up with another business plan. His main issue is he doesn't plan stuff out.
